Grit And Bear With It: Grit Paddles and Their Durability
"One thing you can’t teach is true grit”. While that’s true, to us Pickleballers, that might mean something else to you. How often have you bought a paddle, tried it out in the store, only to find that after a few hours of playing, your paddle’s surface is almost smoother than a baby’s bottom? Okay, maybe not that smooth, but it’s heartbreaking to see what most of us shell out money for gone too soon. Not everyone has that kind of money to spend regularly, or maybe we simply don’t have the time to head out and get a replacement so often. Well, my friend, I would like to introduce to you Durable Grit.
Durable grit is a key paddle innovation in 2026, designed to retain surface texture and spin potential longer than traditional raw carbon. This allows for increased longevity for your pickleball paddles, and better maintenance for your paddle surface as well as spin potential. All this sounds amazing, but know this: Different materials and manufacturing methods means not all durable grit surfaces are made equal in performance and durability.
Based on Pickleball Effect’s test and tier list, here’s my top 3 paddle recommendations, and what puts them above the rest:
1. The Honolulu Crystal Blue Endurance Surface Collection
If you’ve been playing pickleball for a day, you’ve probably already heard of Honolulu. The Crystal Blue Endurance Surface line has one of the top of the line durable grit surfaces in the current market. Now, the word “Crystal” isn’t just to make this paddle sound fancy and impressive, it actually has crystal-infused particles that are mechanically interlocked, which gives you that satisfying spin on a surface designed to last. On top of that, it’s made of carbon fiber, including its surface construction. You know those protective crash helmets? That’s the same material as this paddle.
At its core, Honolulu’s Crystal Blue Endurance paddles core reactor comes with dynamic powerflex technology, giving you predictability even when you add power and pop. If you’re looking specifically at the J3CR paddle, you get the added benefit of Control Joint Technology that has been incorporated into the paddle’s design, which helps with controlled play. All these features allows for a flexible and controlled play style that will last.
2. The Spartus Spitfire PermagritNano Collection
Have you ever had an amazing dish, added something to it, and it turned out even better? Because that’s what the PermagritNano by Spartus is. The PermagritNano is the new and improved version of Spartus’s Permagrit, utilising a grit-infused peel-ply surface designed to maintain texture and reduce early smoothing out. Its QuadFiber Layup is 4 layers of carbon fibre, its proprietary layup is made in a way that delivers what every power player dreams of. The spin this paddle gives is 2,100+ RPM, which speaks for itself. Kanye once said “No one man should have all this power”, but I must disagree with Ye because this power also comes with control. The QuadFiber layout delivers insane feel and huge dwell time. The ball stays on the face longer, so every dink, drop, and reset is done with control.
3. The Enhance Turbo MPP ArmorGrit Collection
You might be wondering why I’m recommending a paddle that, according to the Pickleball Effect, is in tier 2. Aside from grit durability, the Enhance Turbo MPP Armorgrit collection scored a 4.3 as a paddle itself with Pickleball Effect, with its tested spin being a whopping 2,127 RPM. and it’s closest competitor being the aforementioned Spitfire. But the a key difference between the Spitfire and the Turbo is that the Turbo is offers even more power than the Spitfire, with all the tools to be controlled well by a seasoned player.
But this is an article about durable grit, Michaela. What’s the point if the surface doesn’t last? It’s interesting you brought this up, Michaela, because in the testing Pickleball Effect did, the grift surface that was retained for the Turbo MPP is 92%. That’s right, it wasn’t baby butt smooth like ordinary paddles. Only 8% of the surface was different. It just so happened that the two other paddles I mentioned prior lasted even better.
It must be said that grit durability isn’t the end all be all for defining a paddle’s longevity, but it’s important to note that just because a paddle is grittiest, does not promise that gritty texture was built to last. There are many aspects that come to choosing a paddle, such as swing weight, spin, control, power, design (if you’re a little shallow like me), etc. What’s most important is choosing what suits you and your needs.
