Best Pickleball Paddles for Beginners in Singapore: Quality Picks at Every Budget
Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in Singapore, and if you have just discovered it, you are not alone. Courts fill up quickly, group sessions are popping up everywhere, and more players are looking to buy their first proper paddle rather than borrowing whatever is lying around.
With so many brands and options on the market, choosing a first paddle can feel overwhelming. Do you go cheap and risk outgrowing it in a month? Spend more upfront and hope it is the right fit? This guide cuts through the noise with a curated list of paddles we genuinely recommend to new players. From the most wallet-friendly options all the way to paddles that offer serious bang for buck as you grow into the game, here is your guide to buying your first pickleball paddle in Singapore.
(P. S. All of these are available on our online store and at our physical stores at 317 Outram Road and 101 Balestier Road, where you can try most of them before you buy. As Singapore's only dedicated pickleball shop offering equipment demonstration, we encourage new players to come in, hold the paddle, swing it, and feel the difference. Paddles are also available for rent, which is a great way to figure out what suits your style of play before investing in a paddle.)
What to Look for in a Pickleball Paddle
There are four main points that you need to analyse before you get your first paddle. First, the thickness of your paddle’s core, second, the surface material, third, the weight of the paddle, and fourth, the paddle’s shape.
Core thickness
Thicker cores, roughly 15mm and above, are more forgiving and softer, making them great for control and stability. Thinner cores, namely anything under 15mm, gives you more pop and power, and maintains the paddle’s manoeuvrability (aka keeps it easy to move).
Face material
You would have come across a range of surfaces with a multitude of names — fibreglass, kevlar, T700 carbon, 18K, 3K, raw carbon, graphite… the list goes on. In reality, there are only a few main categories of surfaces, with everything else falling into one of these as a variation. They are fibreglass, carbon fibre, graphite, and kevlar.
Fibreglass is a composite surface that is more forgiving and beginner-friendly, and recommended for those who prefer straight, flat and powerful shots. Carbon fibre is more responsive and spin-friendly, meaning it rewards technique but is less forgiving of mishits. There are many types of carbon surfaces including raw carbon, 18K carbon, and T700 carbon. Graphite surfaces are more rigid than carbon fibre but softer than fibreglass, offering fast, powerful response like fibreglass, while providing control for more precision like carbon fibre. Kevlar refers to an aramid fibre, used in bulletproof vests, that provides excellent shock absorption, making paddles more comfortable and arm-friendly. Not only is kevlar more durable and crack resistant than carbon fibre, it also offers a plusher feel and enhanced ball pocketing that allows for more control and spin.
Weight
Aim for 7.5–8.3 oz. Too heavy and your arm tires quickly; too light and you lose stability on faster exchanges.
Shape
Standard or wide shapes offer bigger sweet spots. Elongated shapes give more reach and suit players who like driving from the baseline.
One more point to take note of is whether a paddle is USAP Approved/UPA approved or USAP Standard. USAP/UPA Approved paddles are cleared for official sanctioned tournament play. USAP Standard paddles meet general quality standards and are perfectly suitable for recreational and social play. They are generally not tested for approval to keep costs low and more affordable.
For casual and recreational play, USAP Standard paddles are perfectly fine. If you plan to enter official sanctioned tournaments, you will need a USAPA and UPA-A Approved paddle.

It is not a toy, but a real paddle with a fibreglass surface, honeycomb core, and an extended handle that gives you room for a two-handed backhand. Initiate Super Rookie 13 / 13+ | $48 each or $99 as a set (2 paddles + 4 balls)
The Super Rookie series is Initiate's dedicated beginner line for real pickleball Rookies, and the 13 and 13+ are the sweet spot of the range. Both feature a fibreglass surface with rough texture for natural spin and a 13mm core that strikes a nice balance between control and a livelier response, making them more forgiving than the 10mm models, but with more feel than a thicker 16mm.
The difference between the two? The Super Rookie 13 is a standard shape with a wider face and bigger sweet spot, which ideal if you want maximum forgiveness. The 13+ is an elongated shape with a longer handle and stretched face, giving you more reach and better leverage for drives. This is a great option if you come from a badminton or tennis background and are used to a longer hitting surface. Both share the same 13mm core and fibreglass face, so it comes down entirely to which shape suits your style.

T700 carbon provides a naturally textured face for excellent spin generation and a responsive, crisp feel that fibreglass simply cannot match.
Carbon is less forgiving of mishits than fibreglass, so it does reward technique. But if you are a fast learner, have a racket sports background, or want a paddle you will not outgrow in three months, the Pro T7 Carbon will be perfect for you. The Bang-for-Buck Picks — Engage Pickleball
These deserve a section of their own. Engage is a premium American pickleball brand known for their proprietary core technology and the exceptional feel their paddles deliver. Their Pro paddle series retails at $279 to $384, but these two models bring genuine Engage performance to a fraction of the price, and represent some of the best value in the Singapore market right now.
Engage Pursuit V2 | $149 (on sale from $229)
The Pursuit V2 is built around Engage's Response+ Polymer Core, a 15.2mm core engineered to balance power, control, spin, and dwell time in a single paddle. The Amplified Carbon surface provides a soft, responsive feel with excellent touch. Made in the USA in a hybrid shape (16.25" x 7.75") that works across all play styles, driving from the baseline, dinking at the kitchen, or resetting under pressure.
At $149 on sale from $229, you are getting a paddle built on the same design philosophy as Engage's $329+ Pro series, at less than half the price. USAPA Listed and available for on-site demo at our stores. If you are a new player who is certain they will stick with this sport and wants a paddle that grows with them, this is one of the smartest buys on this list.

Engage Evolution Aero | $159 (on sale from $229)
If the Pursuit V2 is the balanced all-rounder, the Aero is for the player who wants reach, speed, and something a bit different. The headline feature is Variable Aero Flex Technology, an open throat design that increases swing speed and adds paddle flex through the hit, giving a livelier, more dynamic feel. Combined with Engage's HoldTEK Polymer Core and raw T700 carbon fibre face (the softest, most textured carbon face in the Engage range), the Aero is built for players who want to generate pace and spin without a big swing.
Foam injection technology expands the sweet spot, one-piece construction ensures stability, and the 5.5" extended handle is ideal for two-handed backhand players. Made in the USA at $159, a remarkable paddle for the price.

The Six Zero Quartz is currently sold out but expected back in early June. Six Zero's entry-level model features a raw T300 carbon fibre face, 15mm polypropylene core, and a large sweet spot in a forgiving standard shape, available in vibrant gemstone-inspired colourways. Keep an eye on the listing, it tends to move quickly when restocked.
So, Which Paddle Should You Get?
There is no single right answer, but here is how we would frame it.
If you are just dipping your toes in and want to try the sport without spending much, start with the Initiate Kaleidoscope ($35) or the Super Rookie 13 ($48). The two-paddle set at $99 is especially good value if you are bringing a friend along. These paddles are designed to be forgiving, fun, and easy to pick up: exactly what you need when you are still figuring out whether pickleball is your sport.
Initiate is our go-to recommendation for casual and recreational players. The range is thoughtfully built with new players in mind: accessible price points, forgiving materials, and solid quality that does not feel cheap on court.
If you are already hooked and want a paddle that will grow with you, the Engage Pursuit V2 ($149) and Engage Evolution Aero ($159) are our top recommendations for players serious about improving. Engage paddles are built for players who intend to get better: the proprietary core technology, the quality of feel, and the Made in USA craftsmanship give them a performance ceiling that cheaper paddles simply cannot match. You will still be getting real value out of these paddles when you are playing three times a week and starting to think about competing.
Think of Initiate as the brand for discovering pickleball, and Engage as the brand for committing to it.
What we would highly recommend: either try out some paddles at our store or by renting them out first, to get a feel of the sport and of the equipment before committing, or get something that will last you for a while until you figure out your on-court character.
